So its alright to spice up our stories with descriptions and mood setting?
Yes. You still have to stay on-point and not wander too far away from your focus, but esp. for feature stories, description of people, what they're wearing, places, etc., is not just appropriate but can be necessary.
For example, in today's HJ is a story about yesterday's "Walk-A-Mile" fundraiser, including a hoto of male feet in pink feathery mules (or whatever). For the writer, missing description of those shoes and stiletto heels and leopard-spotted high-heeled boots, etc., would be a missed opportunity.
